João Serrão
João Serrão holds a bachelor’s degree in Applied Social Research (1997), a master’s degree in Cultural Management (2013) and is currently a PhD candidate in Digital Media Art (since 2022); his academic background combines methodologies from the social sciences, cultural studies and contemporary artistic practices. Between 2001 and 2017, he worked for Mértola Municipal Council as a senior officer, carrying out cross-cutting responsibilities in the fields of culture, art, heritage and tourism, contributing to the development of strategic programmes for cultural enhancement and the implementation of community-based projects.
Since 2017, he has served as Director and Programme Curator of the Loulé Municipal Art Galleries, a role in which he coordinates curatorial design, defines programme guidelines and promotes cultural mediation initiatives that strengthen the relationship between the institution, artists and the community. At the same time, since 2003 he has been developing photographic projects that explore the territory, landscape and communities of the Algarve and Alentejo, examining dimensions of identity, memory, representation and socio-spatial transformation.
